Tiny Tummy Tips, Issue #58- Open for Guiltless Grub on Memorial Day May 22, 2024 |
A Bariatric Friendly Memorial DayTiny Tummy Tips, Issue #58--Guiltless Grub for Memorial Day Memorial Day is just around the corner! Can you believe it? Next thing you know we’ll be talking about holiday heating, lol! Time sure flies.... Well you know what Memorial Day means... BBQ season is officially kicking off. But don’t worry... With a little creativity, you can enjoy a delicious and fun-filled BBQ without compromising your goals or your progress to date. Whether you’re hosting or attending, here are some fantastic ideas to make your Memorial Day feast both tasty and bariatric-friendly:
1. Grilled Chicken SkewersSkewers are a BBQ classic and perfect for controlling portion sizes.Marinate chicken chunks in a mix of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and your favorite herbs. Add bell peppers, onions, and cherry tomatoes for color and flavor. Grill until the chicken is cooked through and the veggies are slightly charred.
2. Turkey BurgersSwap out beef for lean turkey (translation: 93/7%) to create juicy, protein-packed burgers.Mix ground turkey with finely chopped onions, garlic, and a handful of fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro. Form into small patties (2-4oz) and grill. Serve wrapped in large Romaine lettuce leaves or collard greens.
3. Portobello Mushroom CapsThis is one of my favs!Grill some portobello mushroom caps: Brush them with a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, then season with salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs first. These meaty mushrooms are great as a side dish or use them as “buns” for your turkey burger!
4. Shrimp SkewersIn case you don't already know, shrimp is a fantastic low-calorie, high-protein option.Marinate shrimp in a mix of lime juice, garlic, and a touch of chili powder for a little kick. Thread onto skewers and grill until pink and slightly charred. Serve with a refreshing cucumber and Greek yogurt dip.
5. Grilled VegetablesVeggies are obviously a no-brainer!Load up on colorful veggies like zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, and asparagus. Toss them in a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper, then grill until tender. These can be a great side dish or mixed into a green salad. 6. Cauliflower “Potato” SaladReplace the traditional potato salad with a lighter cauliflower version.Steam cauliflower florets until tender, then mix with plain nonfat Greek yogurt, a bit of mustard, diced celery, and a sprinkle of paprika. It’s creamy, tangy, and much lower in carbs and calories!
7. Greek Yogurt ColeslawDitch the mayo-laden coleslaw for a lighter version using Greek yogurt.Shred cabbage and carrots (or buy pre-shredded cabbage and shredded carrots from Trader Joes like I do!), then toss with Greek yogurt, a splash of apple cider vinegar, a dab of honey, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. It’s crunchy, creamy, and full of flavor. 8. Fruit KebabsFor a sweet treat, make fruit kebabs with chunks of pineapple, watermelon, strawberries, and grapes. These refreshing skewers are a healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you cool… and on track with your goals!
9. Watermelon SaladNothing says summer quite like watermelon! This is another one of my favs: Cube watermelon and mix with crumbled feta cheese, fresh mint leaves, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. This salad is a perfect combination of sweet, salty, and tangy. 10. Iced Herbal TeasDon’t forget about your fluid goal!Stay hydrated with an iced (sugar free) herbal tea. They're a little more "fun" than water for a special occasion like a holiday BBQ! Brew your favorite herbal teas, then chill and serve over ice with a garnish of fresh mint or a slice of lemon.
