Bariatric Carbs per DayTiny Tummy Tips, Issue #015 -- Bariatric Carbs per Day In This Issue1) The truth about “how many carbs should I be eating?2) Bariatric Carb Chart 3) What to Do
The Truth“How many carbs should I be eating?” is one of the most common questions I get, and it’s one of the hardest questions to answer. Because there ISN’T a cut and dry answer.Unfortunately, many well intending, but uninformed, healthcare providers and patients alike perpetuate "carbophobia" by suggesting you can't EVER eat carbs after surgery... ...or that you must keep daily carbs to some unrealistic low number to lose weight. Protein is the priority after surgery and your stomach is too small to hold much else. So it's not like you HAVE to eat low carbs… …it’s that you WIND UP doing so...by default…in order to be able to meet your protein goal. No Real Guidelines There are no “official” guidelines regarding carb intake for bariatric patients that are any different than general healthy recommendations for ALL adults. Bariatric Carb ChartRemember, your carb intake will be low in the beginning by default. But it can increase over time.See this bariatric carb chart for an understanding of how carb intake typically increases. What to DoLet’s Shift the Discussion. The conversation really needs to change from talking about the QUANTITY of daily carbs to the QUALITY of daily carbs. Choosing a food based on lack of its carb count doesn't necessarily lead to a good choice. Low carb cookies are still cookies! Food is more than numbers! So stop worrying about eating TOO MANY carbs. Once you have room to add carbs back in, focus on eating QUALITY carbs. The quantity of carbs (and thus calories) will then take care of itself. Want to know more about quality carbs?
